How Often Should You Clean Carpets, Tile, Ducts & Vents?

- Schedule
A clean, healthy home runs on a simple maintenance rhythm. Here’s how often the big-ticket cleaning jobs actually need doing — so nothing important slips through the cracks.
Carpet cleaning — every 12 months
Most households should have carpets professionally cleaned once a year, and every 6–9 months with pets, kids, or allergies. Regular cleaning extends carpet life and keeps allergens in check — and many manufacturers require it to keep warranties valid. More on carpet cleaning →
Tile & grout — every 1–2 years
Grout is porous and traps grime, so a professional tile & grout cleaning every 1–2 years (with re-sealing) keeps floors bright and easy to maintain. High-traffic kitchens and entryways may need it sooner.
Air ducts — every 3–5 years
Have your air ducts cleaned every 3–5 years — sooner with pets, allergies, or after a renovation. In Central Virginia, long AC seasons and heavy spring pollen make this especially worthwhile.
Dryer vents — once a year
Clean your dryer vent at least once a year (more for large families or long vent runs). Lint buildup is a leading cause of home fires and makes your dryer work harder.
Chimney — once a year
If you use a wood-burning fireplace, schedule a chimney sweep once a year, ideally in late summer or early fall before burning season.
Pressure washing — every 1–2 years
Exterior surfaces pick up mildew and algae — especially shaded, north-facing areas. A pressure washing every 1–2 years protects your siding and restores curb appeal.
