Moving to the Triangle? A Move-In Cleaning Checklist

The Triangle is one of the fastest-growing regions in the country — drawing tech workers to Research Triangle Park, students and faculty to NC State, Duke, and UNC, and families chasing good schools and good weather. With all that movement comes a lot of move-ins and move-outs. Whether you’re arriving, leaving, or turning over a rental, here’s a cleaning checklist built around what actually matters.
Clean before the furniture arrives
The single best time to deep-clean a home is when it’s empty — before your household goods come in, or after the previous tenant leaves. Floors, carpets, and corners are fully accessible, and nothing is in the way. For move-ins, it means you start fresh in a genuinely clean home; for move-outs, it’s how you protect a deposit or meet a lease’s turnover standard.
The room-by-room checklist
Carpets and floors
- Professionally clean all carpet (keep the receipt — many Triangle leases require it at turnover).
- Treat pet spots and red-clay tracking before they set.
- Sweep and mop hard floors; clean tile grout in kitchens and baths.
Kitchen
- Degrease the oven, range, and hood; pull the drip pans.
- Empty, defrost, and wipe the fridge — including behind it.
- Wipe inside every cabinet and drawer.
Bathrooms
- Descale showers, tubs, and fixtures; clean grout.
- Clear the exhaust fans of dust.
Whole home
- Wipe baseboards, sills, blinds, and ceiling fans.
- Replace HVAC filters and burnt-out bulbs.
- Clean air vents and returns — dusty registers stand out in an empty house.
- Don’t forget the dryer vent and lint trap (a safety item and a common charge).
Why carpets and ducts matter most
An empty home hides nothing, and two services do the heavy lifting:
- Carpet cleaning. Professional hot-water extraction resets traffic lanes, lifts red clay, and gives you the receipt many leases require.
- Air duct cleaning. After years of runtime — or a recent renovation — registers and returns collect visible dust. Air duct cleaning clears it out and leaves the system fresh for whoever lives there next.
Special cases in a college-and-tech region
- RTP relocations: corporate moves often run on tight timelines — book the empty-home clean for the window between household-goods delivery and your start date.
- Student & academic rentals near UNC, Duke, and NC State: these turn over on the academic calendar. Schedule carpet and duct cleaning between tenants so the next resident arrives to a fresh unit.
- New builds in Cary and Apex: add a first clean to clear construction dust (see our guide on red clay and new construction).
